The Finest Kitchen Vastu Tips To Promote Harmony in Your Home
The kitchen is a crucial component of any household. It is where you cook food - the source of your nourishment. Since the meals we prepare and consume directly affect our health, the kitchen must be a place of harmony. You can transform the kitchen into a positive space that promotes well-being using Vastu Shastra principles. Kitchen Vastu involves specific guidelines about the kitchen's placement and design within a home. This blog digs deeper into the concept and offers suggestions on implementing it in your kitchen!
What Does it Mean to Plan Your Kitchen as Per Vastu?
Vastu provides instructions regarding the kitchen area's direction, size, layout, and design. In addition to the kitchen direction as per Vastu, it also specifies the appropriate placement of the gas cylinder, stove, electronic appliances, sink, drinking water, windows, entrance, etc. From which side to face while cooking to where the dining area should be positioned and what kind of flooring to have, there are plenty of critical Vastu elements to consider when planning your kitchen's design.
Important Kitchen Vastu Guidelines to Follow
Kitchen Location & Size
Kitchen Direction
Directions are crucial in Vastu Shastra. The South-East is the best kitchen direction as per Vastu. It symbolises the fire element. Therefore, it controls the flow of heat and energy. A South-East facing kitchen helps you cook efficiently. Moreover, it radiates a positive energy that deepens family bonds.
The North-West direction is another good option for the kitchen as per Vastu. It enables good ventilation throughout the area. It allows the steam or heat generated during cooking to release outside and fresh air to enter freely inside. If you can’t place your kitchen in the South-East, a North-West facing kitchen is still a viable solution.
Directions to avoid:
South-West - A kitchen in this direction may have negative consequences for your health and financial condition.
North-East - This direction is not ideal for familial relationships.
Also, bear in mind that a kitchen should never be immediately close to the house's main entrance door. Since it poses an obstruction of entry, a kitchen near the main door can be the cause of adversity.
Kitchen Floor/Level
Ideally, a kitchen should be located on the lowest level of a house. So, even if you own a multi-storied apartment, Vastu suggests that the kitchen should be on the lowest floor. This is because it is safer and easier to carry food from downstairs to upstairs than vice versa. It indicates stability and groundedness.
Kitchen Entrance Position
According to Kitchen Vastu, the entrance to the kitchen area should be in the East, West, or North directions. These directions are considered auspicious and bring you good luck. Avoid putting up the kitchen entry gate/door near any corners.
Kitchen Windows
The windows should preferably be on the East side of the kitchen. Since the sun rises in this direction, kitchen windows facing towards the East can bring in ample natural light during the morning while also improving ventilation.
Kitchen Size
An appropriately-sized kitchen as per Vastu covers an area of 10x10 feet. A kitchen of this size should easily accommodate all the cabinets, countertops, and appliances, letting you utilise the space optimally.
Placement of Kitchen Appliances
If you have a South-East kitchen, try placing the gas cylinder and the cooking stove in the farthest South-Eastern point in the area. This direction is called the 'Agnikone' direction, considered an ideal kitchen direction as per Vastu for cooking. The length-wise placement of the stove should be in an East-West orientation. The exhaust fan should be above the stove.
Electronic appliances like the microwave and refrigerator must also face the South-East since the Agnikone direction favours fire and energy flow.
Kitchen Sink and Drinking Water Placement
The North-East direction represents the natural element of water, denoting its purity and freshness. Therefore, based on Kitchen Vastu guidelines, the kitchen sink must be oriented towards the North-East. It ensures optimal water flow and a harmonious environment. For the best results, install the sink diagonally opposite to where the cooking stove stands. The drinking water filter machine and storage vessels should also face the North-East.
Dining Room Placement
Vastu Shastra recommends combining the kitchen with the dining area for a prosperous home. So, instead of having a separate dining room, you can blend it within the kitchen space. Suitable directions for setting up the dining area in the kitchen include North-East, North-West, and South-East.
Kitchen Decor
The main colour palette for the kitchen as per Vastu should comprise light or neutral hues. Opt for shades like white, beige, cream, etc. or pastel colours like baby pink, powder blue, mint green, lavender, butter yellow, etc. Steer clear of dark shades like black in the kitchen to ward off negativity.
You must also pay attention to the flooring to properly integrate Kitchen Vastu into your home. Stone, tiles, and marble are good options for the kitchen floor. These materials are nature-derived, provide good insulation, and are easy to maintain. Avoid covering the kitchen floor with carpets or other synthetic flooring options.
Adjoining Rooms
The kitchen can be close to the living room, but Kitchen Vastu states that it should not be immediately next to the bedrooms/sleeping quarters. Avoid keeping the bedroom directly above the kitchen in a multi-storied flat layout. Having a bedroom above or beside the kitchen nullifies the energy in both spaces. You must avoid such a placement for health reasons. Additionally, the kitchen should never be placed above or below the mandir or the puja room. Putting some distance between the two areas is advisable for serenity in the house.
Conclusion
Whether it is choosing a suitable design theme, the positioning of the entrance/windows, or the right kitchen direction as per Vastu, this article outlines all essential tips for planning a joyful kitchen space.
